All your friends are on it. Or if you’re a parent, your kids are on it. Now, you want to join in the fun and you have already signed up for your very own TikTok account. Congrats! But, before you go all in, it’s important to know a few helpful pointers on how to get the most out of this super popular social media platform that has been downloaded over a BILLION times. Yes, over a BILLION times. Now, check out these Top 4 Tips for New TikTok Users:

Know Your Feeds

Naturally, if you’re new to the lip-syncing app, TikTok can be a bit overwhelming. The first thing you should do after creating a profile is to take some time to navigate the app so you can get a better sense of its features and what other users are doing out there. Keep in mind that TikTok is organized by two main threads. At the top of the screen, you should see Following, which features clips from the people you choose to follow. To the right of that is the For You feed. Each time you press on it, you can watch a different video. Note: you can spend all day watching the variety of entertainment on there, whether it’s the cool dance moves, adorable pet videos and any other thing that you can think of.

Navigate Like a Pro

At the bottom of the TikTok screen are a few buttons, the Home icon. Next to it is the Discover button in the shape of a magnifying glass, which is awesome to see the Trending Hashtag, whether it’s #tiktokcats, #artschool, or whatever else is buzzing at the moment. In the center, is the + button, and that’s where you can create your first TikTok video. Next to it is the Inbox, which where people send you messages. Finally, the Me icon is your profile, and you can edit it whenever you feel like it.

Show Your Love

On the right-hand side of the screen, you’ll see five main icons. The top circle is the profile of the TikTok user whose video you’re currently watching. Underneath is the + sign if you want to click it and start following that user. Below is the heart symbol, and you can press that if you love the video – like that video. Next is the comment button, and you can read comments or add a comment of your own. The fourth button is a download button if you want to download the video. Finally, the fifth button with musical notes coming from it is the song featured in the clip.

Pick a Cool Song

Since music is essentially what makes TikTok so entertaining, you should put some thought into the music you select for your videos. So tap the Music icon, and start browsing away. If you’re not so sure what to select, you might just want to go with one of the songs under TikTok #Challenge. Types in #challenge in the Discover field and you’ll see what has the most traction under Sounds. So for instance, Blow Your Mind by Dua Lipa has more than 1.3 million people using that clip for the #Mwahchallenge. There’s always an interesting challenge; it’s up to you which one you’re going to take on for your first TikTok. Good luck!

As you spend more time TikTokking away, you’ll get better at using the insanely popular app, creating videos, and being part of the community. For the most part, anything goes, and you just have to be creative and go for it in the end. Who knows, you could even go TikTok viral!
